Evaluate three-fifths plus 0.7, giving the answer in its simplest form.
In order to answer this question, we need to convert both of the terms into either fractions or decimals. In this case, we will convert 0.7 into a fraction. 0.7 is equal to seven-tenths or seven over 10. This means that we need to evaluate the fraction sum of three-fifths and seven-tenths. In order to add or subtract two fractions, we need to have a common denominator.
In this case, we need to find the lowest common denominator of five and 10. This is the same as the lowest common multiple of five and 10. Both five and 10 divide exactly into 10. This means that we need to multiply the numerator and denominator of the first fraction by two. Three multiplied by two is equal to six. And, five multiplied by two is equal to 10. Our calculation simplifies to six-tenths plus seven-tenths.
Once the denominators are the same, we just need to add the numerators. Six plus seven is equal to 13. We can therefore say that three-fifths plus 0.7, written in its simplest form, is thirteen-tenths or 13 over 10. We could convert this answer from an improper or top-heavy fraction to a mixed fraction or decimal. We do this by dividing 13 by 10. 13 divided by 10 is equal to 1.3. When we divide by 10, we move all the digits one place to the right. This could also be written as one and three-tenths. The calculation three-fifths plus 0.7 is also equal to 1.3 and one and three-tenths.
