Arrange the following in ascending order: 46 percent, seven-ninths, 57 percent, 24 25ths, and 17 20ths.
To arrange numbers in ascending order, they should be increasing left to right, meaning becoming larger, more positive, left to right. Some of these numbers are in percents. Some are fractions. We could change all of these numbers to be the same. Either make them all percentages, fractions, or decimals.
Let’s go ahead and make them all decimals. Let’s begin with 46 percent. To go from a percentage to a decimal, technically, this is 46.0 percent. So to go from a percentage to a decimal, we need to move the decimal place two places to the left and drop the percentage sign.
So right now we have .460. We don’t need the zero at the end. And to help the decimal place stick out, it’s good to put a zero in front of it. So 46 percent is 0.46. Seven-ninths we can put in our calculator, seven divided by nine. And we get a 0.78.
57 percent we follow the same steps as our first time. We drop the percent sign and move the decimal place two places to the left. So we have 0.57. And then now 24 25ths, take 24 and divide by 25. And we get 0.96. And then lastly 17 divided by 20 is 0.85.
So let’s list these in increasing order, ascending order. So we should go from small to large. So 0.46 will be written first, then 0.57, then 0.78, then 0.85, and then lastly 0.96. So 0.46 was first. It’s our smallest. 0.57 was next, then 0.78, then 0.85, and then lastly 0.96.
Now before we write this as our final answer, we need to put the numbers back in their original form. 0.46 was 46 percent, 0.57 was 57 percent, 0.78 was seven-ninths, 0.85 was 17 20ths, and lastly 0.96 was 24 25ths. Therefore, this would be our final answer for arranging the numbers in ascending order.
