Reading Clocks: Time to the Quarter Hour

In this video, we will learn how to tell time to the quarter hour on both digital and analog clocks. Here are four clocks. We call this type of clock with a face and two hands an analog clock. The longest of the two hands on the clock is called the minute hand. When the minute hand is pointing at number three, we know it’s quarter past. When the minute hand points to number six, we know it’s half past the hour. When the minute hand is pointing at nine, we know it’s quarter to. And when the minute hand points to number 12, we know it’s something o’clock.

How many minutes are there in a quarter of an hour? We know there are 60 minutes in one hour, so half an hour is half of 60 which is 30 minutes. And if we half that again, we get a quarter of an hour, which is 15 minutes. Another way to say quarter past is 15 minutes past. If we start at 12 or o’clock and count 15 minutes — five, 10, 15 minutes — two quarter turns makes half an hour. Two quarter turns makes a half turn. So we know that half past is 30 minutes past the hour. If we make three-quarter turns from o’clock, it’s quarter to the next hour. We know that one hour is 60 minutes; half an hour is 30 minutes; quarter of an hour is 15 minutes. So three-quarters is 45 minutes past the hour, and it’s a quarter of a turn or 15 minutes until the next hour.

There are four-quarters in one hour. Each quarter of an hour is worth 15 minutes. Quarter past is the same as 15 minutes past. Two-quarters or one-half is 30 minutes. Three-quarters of an hour is 45 minutes. And a whole hour or four-quarters is 60 minutes. When we’re telling the time using a digital clock, if there are zero minutes, we know it’s o’clock. If it’s 15 minutes past the hour, we know it’s quarter past. 30 minutes past the hour means it’s half past. And if it’s 45 minutes past the hour, it means it’s quarter to the next hour. 45 plus 15 makes 60. And we know there are 60 minutes in a whole hour. In this video, we’re going to practice reading and writing the time to the quarter hour. Let’s have a go at some practice questions.

Write the time in words. Is it quarter past ten, quarter to nine, quarter to ten, or quarter past nine?

In this question, we’re shown a digital clock, and we’re asked to write the time in words. What time is shown on the clock? We know the first digit on a digital clock tells us the hour. And on this clock, the first digit is a nine. Both of these times have a nine in them. These digits on the clock tell us the number of minutes. If it’s 9:15, that means it’s 15 minutes past nine. We know that one hour is 60 minutes. Half an hour is half of 60 which is 30 minutes. And a quarter of an hour is 15 minutes. The time in words is quarter past nine.

Which clock shows the same time as this one?

We’re shown the time on an analog clock. And we have to find the digital clock which shows the same time. What is the time on this clock? The shortest hand, the hour hand, is just past the number one. So we know it’s something past 1 o’clock. The hour shown on both of these digital clocks is one, and the minute hand is pointing to number three. This means it’s quarter past one. How many minutes have passed when a quarter of a turn has been made around the clock? Five, 10, 15. It’s 15 minutes past one or quarter past one. So this is the digital clock, which shows the same time as the analog clock we were given. The time is 1:15.

What is the time, in words, that this clock shows? It is a quarter to six. It is a quarter past five. It is a quarter past six. It is a quarter to five.

We know that quarter past is the same as 15 minutes past the hour. Half past is 30 minutes past the hour. And quarter to is 45 minutes past the hour. So if it’s 5:45, that means it’s quarter to six or 15 minutes until 6 o’clock. It is a quarter to six. The time in words that this clock shows is a quarter to six.

Which analog clock shows the same time as this digital one?

We’re shown a digital clock with the time 4:45. We have to select the analog clock, which shows the time 4:45. 4:45 is between 4 o’clock and 5 o’clock. Quarter past four is 4:15, 4:30 is half past four, and 4:45 is quarter to five. In another 15 minutes, it will be 5 o’clock. Which of our clocks shows 45 minutes past four or quarter to five. Both of these two clocks show a quarter to time. The minute hand is pointing to number nine, which means there are 15 minutes until the next hour or quarter of an hour until the next hour. But the hour hand on the first clock is between the hours five and six.

We already know that 4:45 is between the hours four and five. The hour hand on this clock is between 4 and 5 o’clock. This is the analog clock which shows 4:45 or quarter to five. We used a number line to help and picked the analog clock, which shows the same time as the digital one.

What have we learned in this video? We’ve learned how to tell time to the quarter hour on analog and digital clocks.
