Counting Objects up to Five

In this video, we will learn how to count up to five to answer questions about how many objects there are in a group.

We have five fingers on each hand. We can use our fingers to help us count to five. One, two, three, four, five. Here’s a group of chickens. To help us count them, we could place them in a straight line. One, two, three, four, five. There are five chickens. Another way we could count the chickens is to place them one by one into a group. One, two, three, four, five.

We placed the objects in a group and counted each one. There are still five chickens. We can place the chickens in a line or the chickens in a group to help us count them. We can also use a five frame to help us count. Each chicken has a counter. As we count each chicken, we can place a counter in the five frame. One, two, three, four, five. A five frame holds five counters. It can help us count up to five objects.

Let’s practice counting up to five and answer some questions about how many objects there are in a group.

How many flowers are there?

We’re shown a group of flowers. We have to count them to find out how many there are. The flowers are in a straight line. That makes it easy for us to count them. Let’s count. One, two, three. There are three flowers.

How many bears are there?

We’re shown a group of bears. We have to count them to find out how many there are. We could use counters to help us count how many bears there are. One, two, three, four. We used counters to help us count how many bears there are in the group. There are four.

Pick the five frame that has the same number of counters as the number next to it.

We’re shown four different five frames. Next to each of the five frames is a number. We have to pick the five frame where the number of counters matches the number next to it. The first number is number four. Are there four counters in the five frame? Let’s count. One, two. The number of counters and the number don’t match. Four and two are not the same. The next number is number five. Are there five counters in this five frame? Yes, there are. A five frame holds five counters. This five frame is full. That means there are five counters. The number matches the number of counters.

The number is number one, but there are three counters in the five frame. So, this number doesn’t match the number of counters in the five frame. The number and the number of counters don’t match here either. The number is three, but there are four counters in the five frame. We picked the five frame that has the same number of counters as the number next to it, the number five and five counters.

What have we learned in this video? We learned to count up to five by placing objects in a line or a group. We’ve also learned that we can use a five frame to help us count up to five objects.
