Olivia bought nine gallons of soda for her birthday party. If there will be 18 people at the party, how many cups of soda could each person have?

We’re told in the question that there are nine gallons of soda that need to be shared amongst 18 people. Dividing both sides by nine tells us that there’ll be one gallon of soda for two people. Nine divided by nine is equal to one, and 18 divided by nine is equal to two. Dividing both sides of this by two will calculate the amount of soda that each person has.

One divided by two can be written as a half, which is the same as 0.5. Each person at the party has 0.5 gallons of soda. We need to calculate the number of cups of soda that each person can have. One gallon of liquid is equal to 16 cups. This means that half a gallon, or 0.5 gallons, is equal to eight cups. As Olivia has bought enough soda for each person to have 0.5 gallons, they will each be able to have eight cups of soda.
