Which of the following equations does not belong with the others? A) 10𝑥 equals 60, B) four 𝑥 equals 24, C) three 𝑥 equals 18, or D) 12𝑥 equals 24.

Well, to work out which one does not belong with the others, we’re actually gonna solve each of these equations in turn. Gonna start with equation A). So we’ve got 10𝑥 is equal to 60. Let’s solve this.

We’re gonna divide both sides by 10, which gives us the answer 𝑥 is equal to six. Now we’re gonna go and do equation B), which is four 𝑥 is equal to 24. Now to solve this equation, we’re gonna divide both sides by four, which also gives us an answer of 𝑥 is equal to six.

So now we can go on to equation C), which is three 𝑥 is equal to 18. Now to solve this equation, we divide both sides by three. And yet again, we get 𝑥 is equal to six. So therefore, we would assume that D) is going to be the odd one out and not belong with the others. But let’s solve it just to make sure.

So for equation D), we have 12𝑥 is equal to 24. To solve this, we’re gonna divide both sides by 12, which gives us 𝑥 is equal to two. And as we expected, that is different from the others. So therefore, we can say that equation D) does not belong with the others.
