21 add 40 equals what?

The number 40 is a multiple of 10: 10, 20, 30, 40. 40 is four tens. We have to add 40 to 21, which has two tens and a one. Now we can add together the tens. We have two tens and four tens which makes six tens altogether. And there’s nothing to add to the one because 40 has no ones. 60 plus one equals 61.

21 plus 40 equals 61. We found our answer by adding four tens to 21.
