Hannah started this pattern with the rule subtract eight. What is the next number? Then she colored every third number green. Describe the pattern that the green numbers will follow.

So let’s begin where Hannah started the pattern with the rule subtract eight. We need to find the next number. So in order to get the next number, we must follow the pattern. We must subtract eight. And since the last number that we know of was 30, we must take 30 and subtract eight. And 30 minus eight is 22. Therefore, the next number in her pattern would be 22.

Next, she colored every third number green. Describe the pattern that the green numbers will follow. So the two green numbers that we actually know of are 62 and 38. So how did we go from 62 to 38? Well since 38 is less than 62, we must have subtracted a number. So 62 minus some number is equal to 38, and that number would have to be 24 because 62 minus 24 is equal to 38.

We could have also found that number by subtracting 38 from 62. That would have given us 24. Another way to look at this would be looking at our original pattern. They’re the exact same numbers. So if we’re looking for every third number now that’s green, we would have to go through this subtract eight, this subtract eight, and this subtract eight.

And eight plus eight plus eight is 24. Therefore, the pattern that the Green numbers will follow will be to subtract 24.
