By dividing by two, calculate 50 percent of 32 mentally.
50 percent is equal to one-half. And to work out a half of any number, we divide by two. In this question, we need to divide 32 by two. 30 divided by two is equal to 15. Two divided two is equal to one. This means that 32 divided by two is equal to 16. We can check this answer by multiplying 16 by two. We know from our times tables that 10 multiplied by two is equal to 20. And, six multiplied by two is equal to 12. 20 plus 12 is equal to 32. Therefore, 16 multiplied by two is equal to 32.
We can also work out 32 divided by two using the bus stop method. Three divided by two is equal to one remainder one. We need to carry the second one to the units column. 12 divided by two is equal to six. Therefore, 32 divided by two equals 16. Using any of these methods, we have proved that 50 percent of 32 equals 16.
