This pencil costs 30 cents. How many dimes do I need to buy it?

A dime is worth 10 cents. So if we count in tens to reach 30, that will tell us how many dimes we need: 10, 20, 30. Three tens or three dimes makes 30 cents. So you would need three dimes to buy the pencil.
