The time is 4:55 and Charlotte’s mom is cooking dinner. It will be ready at five o’clock. How many minutes until dinner is ready?

When we talk about time like this, we talk about the hour and the minutes. If the time is now 4:55, it’s 55 minutes after four o’clock. The hour is four, and the minutes are 55. To go from four o’clock to five o’clock is one hour. How many minutes is equal to one hour? One hour has 60 minutes.

If we look closely at the time we were given, we were given 55 minutes after four o’clock. How would we go from 55 minutes to 60 minutes? We would need to add five minutes. By adding five minutes to 55 minutes after four, it will become 60 minutes after four. 60 minutes after four is one hour after four. 60 minutes after four is five o’clock. It is five minutes until five o’clock and five minutes until dinner is ready.
