5413 multiplied by 86 equals what?

We need to use long multiplication to help us calculate the answer. First, we’re going to multiply 5413 by six and then by 80. So let’s start by multiplying by six. And we need to start multiplying in the ones column. Three multiplied by six is 18. We can write the eight ones in the ones column and then exchange the 10 in the tens column.

Now we can move into the tens column to multiply. One 10 multiplied by six is six plus the one we exchanged make seven. Moving into the hundreds column, we have four hundreds to multiply by six. Four multiplied by six is 24. 24 hundreds is the same as 2400. So we can write the four in the hundreds place and exchange the 20 hundreds for two thousands.

Moving into the thousands column, we need to multiply five thousands by six. Five sixes are 30, plus the two we exchange makes 32. Now we need to multiply 5413 by 80. We need to write a zero in the ones column because we’re multiplying by eight tens. This zero allows us to shift to the left into the tens column to multiply by eight tens.

So we can begin in the ones column, multiplying three by eight or eight tens. Three times eight is 24. One times eight is eight, plus the two we exchange makes 10. Four times eight is 32, plus the one we exchanged makes 33.

Finally, we need to multiply five by eight, which is 40, plus the three we exchanged makes 43. Now I need to add our two totals together. Eight, 11, four plus zero plus the one we exchanged is five. Two plus three is five. Three plus three is six. And there’s just a four over nothing to add in this column, which makes four. 5413 multiplied by 86 equals 465518.
