Is this true or false: five plus seven equals seven plus five?

We can draw a model to help us. Here, we need to show five plus seven. And here, we need to show seven plus five. Here we have five and here we have seven. And on this side, we have seven and five. So how much does five plus seven equal? One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, 10, 11, 12. Five plus seven equals 12.

Did you notice that these two have the same amount? We’ve already counted this number and we know it’s seven. So let’s start our addition at seven and count on five more: seven, eight, nine, 10, 11, 12.

Five plus seven equals 12. Seven plus five equals 12. So they are equal. The statement is true. We drew a picture or a model to help us find the answer. And we saw that five plus seven is the same as seven plus five. Both gave us an answer of 12.
