Use the place value blocks to help you add 617 and 238. Will we have to regroup to help us add these numbers? No, yes we will have to regroup the tens, or yes we will have to regroup the ones. Add the ones. Write the missing number. Hint: what do we do if we have 10 ones? Add the tens. Write the missing number. And, add the hundreds. Write the missing number.

In this question, we have to add two three-digit numbers, 617 and 238. And, we have a place value chart with place value blocks to help us if we need it. The first part of the question asks us if we need to regroup to help us add these numbers. Let’s take a closer look at the calculation and the place value chart.

In the ones column, we need to add together seven ones and eight ones. And in the ones column on the place value chart, we have seven ones and eight ones. Seven plus eight or eight plus seven is 15. It looks like we’re going to have to regroup the ones. If we take three from the eight ones and add it to the seven ones, that gives us 10 ones. Now, we need to regroup these 10 ones. 10 ones is the same as one 10. So we can regroup. We take 10 ones and exchange them for one 10, which we place in the tens column. So the answer to the first part of the question, will we have to regroup to help us add these numbers, is yes. We will have to regroup the ones.

Now, we can add the ones. We know that seven plus eight is 15. And, we need to exchange those 10 ones for one 10. So, the missing number that we need to write in the ones column is the digit five.

Next, we have to add the tens. We had one 10 and three more, and we also have one that we exchanged. So all together, we have five tens. So, the missing digit in the tens column is the digit five. We have five ones and five tens.

Finally, we have to add the hundreds. Six plus two is eight. The missing digit in the hundreds column is eight. We had to add together 617 and 238. We calculated the answer using the place value blocks to help us. We had to regroup the ones. There were five ones, five tens, and eight hundreds in our answer. 617 plus 238 equals 855. The missing numbers are five, five, and eight.
