On Wednesday, Darius earned 96 pounds. He worked for a total of eight hours. How much did he earn per hour of work?

So in this question, we’ve been given the total number of hours worked — it’s eight — and the total amount of money earned, 96 pounds. And we’re asked to work out how much Darius earned per hour of work.

Now to do this, we’re going to need to make the reasonable assumption that Darius earned the same amount of money for every hour that he worked. So if Darius earns 96 pounds for eight hours of work, then to find the amount that he earns per hour or in one hour, we need to divide 96 pounds by eight. We can do this division using a short division or bus stop method.

First, we see how many times eight goes into nine, so there’s one eight in nine with a remainder of one, which we carry on to the next column. Next, we see how many times does eight go into 16 or how many eights make 16. And the answer to this is two, and there’s no remainder. So 96 divided by eight is equal to 12. And so we can say that Darius earned 12 pounds per hour of work.
