On Wednesday, Isabella deposited 27 dollars in her account. On Thursday, she withdrew 30 dollars. If you represent both of these situations by integers, which has a higher absolute value?

To deposit money means to add money to your account. To withdraw money means to take away money from your account, subtract it from it. And we’re to represent this situation with integers. The integers which are represented by 𝑍 are negative numbers zero and are positive numbers.

So if we deposited 27 dollars into an account, that would represent a positive 27. And then if she withdrew 30 dollars, that would be subtracting 30. So that would be negative 30. But it says, “which has — meaning between these two integers — which has a higher absolute value?” So which number is larger? The absolute value of 27 or the absolute value of negative 30.

The absolute value sign will make all numbers positive whether they’re negative or positive already to begin with. So the absolute value of 27 is 27 and the absolute value of 30 is 30. And 30 is greater than 27.

Therefore, withdrawing 30 dollars would have a higher absolute value.
