Hexagons

In this video, we will learn how to identify hexagons. How can we tell if a shape is a hexagon? All of these shapes are hexagons. What do you notice about these shapes? Are all hexagons orange? No, they’re not. Some of these hexagons are orange, some are blue, some are red, some are pink, and some are green. Hexagons can be any color. Are all hexagons big shapes or small? That’s not how we identify hexagons either. Some of these hexagons are big. Some are small. They’re all hexagons. Hexagons can be different sizes and different colors, but they always have six sides.

It doesn’t matter if we change the position of a hexagon. Hexagons have six sides. We can tell a shape is a hexagon if it has six sides. Here’s an example of some hexagons in everyday life. Did you spot the hexagons? Have you ever eaten honeycomb or ever seen honeycomb? Bees use bees wax to make honeycomb, which we use to make honey. Every time a bee places a new blob of bees wax onto the honeycomb, it sets as a hexagon. This is a really good example of a hexagon in real life.

Can you spot any hexagons in this football? Sometimes footballs are made by stitching pieces of leather shapes together. Is this shape a hexagon? Let’s count its sides. One, two, three, four, five. This isn’t a hexagon because we know that hexagons have six sides. This shape is actually called a pentagon. Can you spot any hexagon in this football? How about this shape? One, two, three, four, five, six. This shape has six sides. It must be a hexagon. This shape is a hexagon, so is this shape.

What do you notice about these two hexagons? The sides of this hexagon are all the same length. We call these types of hexagon regular hexagons. Regular means all the same; all the sides are the same length. This shape is a hexagon, but the sides are not equal. But they both have six sides, so they are all both hexagons. We call shapes that have six sides hexagons. Let’s try some questions now to help us practice identifying hexagons.

How many sides does a hexagon have?

In this question, we’re shown a hexagon, and we have to count how many sides it has. Let’s use some counters to help us count the number of sides. One, two, three, four, five, six. A hexagon has six sides.

How many corners does a hexagon have?

To help us work out how many corners a hexagon has, we can draw one. We know a hexagon has six sides. One, two, three, four, five, six. Now we can count the number of corners the hexagon has. One, two, three, four, five, six. A hexagon has six corners.

Which of the following is a hexagon?

We’re shown four different shapes. We have to select the one which is a hexagon. We know that a hexagon is a shape which has six sides. So we need to count the number of sides that each of our shapes has. We’re looking for the one with six sides. Let’s use counters to help us count the number of sides.

The first shape has one, two, three, four, five sides. So the first shape is not a hexagon. The second shape has four sides. It’s a rectangle, not a hexagon. Now let’s try the third shape. One, two, three, four, five, six. This shape is a hexagon because hexagons have six sides. And the final shape has eight sides, which is more than six. So we know this isn’t a hexagon either. We picked the shape which is a hexagon.

How many of the given shapes are hexagons?

We know that a hexagon is a shape with six sides. How many of the shapes that we’ve been given are hexagons? Is this shape a hexagon? Does it have six sides? No, this shape has three sides, which means it’s a triangle. Do you recognize this shape? It has four sides. It’s a square. Is this shape a hexagon? Does it have six sides? One, two, three, four, five, six. This shape is a hexagon. Does this shape have six sides? No, it has four.

How about this shape? Can you count the number of sides? It’s a triangle. It has three sides. Is this shape a hexagon? It has one, two, three, four, five, six sides. It’s a hexagon. So far, we found two hexagons. Is this a hexagon? Do you know the name of this shape? It’s a rectangle. How many sides does a rectangle have? Four. This shape isn’t a hexagon either. Is this a hexagon? It has one, two, three, four, five, six sides. It’s a hexagon. Three of the given shapes are hexagons. All of the circled shapes have six sides, which means they’re hexagons.

What have we learned in this video? We’ve learned that hexagons have six sides and six corners. And we can identify hexagons by the number of sides it has. If a shape has six sides, it’s a hexagon.
