This square has been split into four equal parts or quarters. This means that the denominator of our fraction is four. Only one of the four parts has been shaded, so the numerator is one. The fraction is written as the number of parts shaded over the total number of parts. The fraction of the square that is shaded is one-quarter or one-fourth.
