A father split some money 𝑚 equally between his three sons. Write an expression for the amount of money received by each son.

𝑚 is the amount of money the father’s going to give, and then he is splitting the money between three sons. What would be a math word maybe we could use for the term split? What is an operation that we could use here?

What if we said the father divided some money 𝑚 equally between his three sons? Then it becomes a little bit more clear what we should do here. He took his money 𝑚; he split it or divided it equally among his three sons, so we say 𝑚 divided by three.

This would be a valid expression for the amount of money received by each son. We can also write the amount of money received by each son as a fraction, 𝑚 over three, because 𝑚 over three is the same value as 𝑚 divided by three. We can say that each son received 𝑚 divided by three dollars.
