Round 241639 to the nearest thousand.

The first thing we need to do is recognize which digit is in the thousands place. The thousands place is four places after the decimal. And in this value, there’s a one in the thousands place.

To round to the thousands place, we look to the digit one place to the right, in the hundreds place. There’s a six in the hundreds place. Because six is greater than five, we’ll round up.

The one in the thousands place will become a two. Everything to the left of the thousands place stays the same. Everything to the right of the thousands place becomes a zero. 241639 rounded to the nearest thousand equals 242000.
