Emma has three boxes with 10 candles in each box. How many candles does she have in total? How many groups of 10 does she have?

To find out how many candles she has in total, we can use a number line to help. We know that each box has 10 candles. So we need to count in 10s. We know there are 10 candles in each box and there are three boxes. So we have to count in 10s three times: 10, 20, 30. So Emma has 30 candles in total.

To help us work out how many groups of 10 Emma has, we can draw a model. And we can replace the candles with the number 10. So we can see that Emma has one group of 10, two groups of 10, three groups of 10. So we found that Emma has 30 candles in total. And we found our answer by counting in 10s on a number line. And we found that Emma has three groups of 10. We draw a picture to represent the three boxes of candles.
