Given the range of a set of data is 86 and the lowest value is 53, determine the highest value in the set.
In this question, we have an unknown number of data values. But we are told that the range is 86 and the lowest value is 53. That means if we were to put these data values in order from the lowest to highest, then the lowest value would be 53. We’re asked to work out the highest value in the set. And we can do that given the information about the range. The range can be calculated as the highest data value subtract the lowest data value. We are given that the range is 86, and we can define the highest value in this data set as 𝑥. And so 86 must be equal to 𝑥 minus 53. We can then add 53 to both sides, and that gives us 139 is equal to 𝑥. And so we have the answer that the highest value in this set must be 139.
