Complete the following: 19 months equals blank years. If your answer is a fraction, write it in its simplest form.

We’re given 19 months, and we’re trying to convert that to years. I want you to think about something: one month is how many years? Imagine that each of these blocks represent one month, and there are 12 blocks, which means this image could represent one whole year.

If I shade in one block, one month, out of the 12 months, it will represent one month out of the year, and so we could say that one month equals one twelfth of a year. Each month is one twelfth one out of 12 for a whole year.

We’re working with 19 months, which means we would need to shade 19 blocks. This is a picture of 12 twelfths. Since we’ve shaded 12 months, we need to shade seven more to equal 19. 12 twelfths plus seven twelfths would equal 19 months. 19 months could be represented in this way. 19 months would be equal to 19 twelfths years.

From the picture, we can tell that that’s a little bit more than a year and a half. Since our answer is a fraction and we need to write it in its simplest form, we’ll leave it as 19 twelfths years.
