Convert 32 percent to a fraction in its simplest form.

To change any percentage to a fraction, we need to recall what the word ”percent” actually means. ”Per” means ”out of” and ”cent” means ”100.” So 32 percent is literally 32 out of 100. Once we know this, we can write 32 percent as a fraction fairly easily. It’s 32 over 100 or thirty-two hundredths.

Remember though, we do need to fully simplify this fraction. We should be able to spot really quickly that it isn’t currently fully simplified. Both the numerator and the denominator are even numbers. We know this because they end in either zero, two, four, six, or eight. This means they can both be divided by two.

Actually though, they do have a larger common factor. The highest common factor of 32 and 100 is four. So we can divide both the numerator and the denominator by four to simplify. 32 divided by four is eight. 100 divided by four is 25. We could use the bus stop method to do this. However, dividing by four is the same as halving and then halving again. One-half of 100 — that’s 100 divided by two — is 50. And then when we halve 50, we get 25. 32 percent as a fraction in its simplest form is eight over 25.
