In a particular school, there are 70 girls and 50 boys in year 11. The whole year group sat an exam. 51 of the girls passed the exam and 48 percent of the boys passed the exam. Calculate the percentage of year 11 students that passed the exam.

So the first thing we should do if we wanna solve this problem is work out the total number of students in year 11. So therefore, to work this out, we’re gonna add 70 because there are 70 girls and 50 cause there are 50 boys together. And we’re gonna get 70 add 50, which is equal to 120. So next, what we want to do is work out the number of boys and the number of girls that passed. Well, we’re told that 51 of the girls passed the exam.

So next, what we need to do is work out how many of the boys passed the exam. So now, to work out the number of boys, what we’re gonna do is multiply the percentage. That’s 48 percent. Well, we can turn that into a multiplier by dividing it by 100. And if we’re gonna divide it by 100, we move each digit two place values to the right. So we get 0.48 multiplied by 50 because that’s the number of boys in year 11.

So when we multiply 50 and 0.48, we get 24. So therefore, we know that 24 boys passed the exam. And we also know that 51 girls passed the exam. So therefore, we can say the total passes, which is girls and boys, is gonna be equal to 75. And that’s because it’s 51 add 24.

So now, to work out the percentage that passed, what we’re gonna do is get the total number of students that passed, divide them by the total number of students, and then multiply it by 100. And this is the method we use to get the percentage of amount. So therefore, the percentage that passed is gonna be worked out using 75, that’s cause the total number of passes divided by the total amount, which is 120, and then multiply it by 100. So therefore, this is gonna give us a final answer of 62.5 percent.

So therefore, we can say that the percentage of year 11 students that passed the exam is 62.5 percent.
