On this clock, the hour hand is between two and three. The clock shows the time as 2:45. Remember that the hour hand has not reached three yet. So it’s before three o’clock. What time does this clock show?

On this clock, the hour hand is between seven and eight o’clock. It’s not quite eight o’clock. So we know that it’s some minutes past seven. The minute hand on both clocks is pointing to number nine. This means it’s 45 minutes past seven and 45 minutes past two on the first clock. If we were to start at 0 o’clock and count around to the minute hand in fives, we can see that 45 minutes have passed: five, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45. So the time on this clock is 7:45.
