Which of these polygons has six sides?

We’ve been given four different polygons, each in a different color. And we need to determine which one has six sides. Let’s start with what we recognize is a triangle. Almost immediately we know that a triangle doesn’t have six sides because all triangles have three sides, one, two, three. This triangle cannot have six sides.

Next, I notice a rectangle. Rectangles are quadrilaterals. They have four sides, one, two, three, four. Quadrilaterals are not six-sided.

I don’t immediately recognize this green shape. Let’s count its sides, one, two, three, four, five. This polygon has five sides. It’s not the one we’re looking for.

Our last shape, this blue shape, needs to have six sides. So let’s count just to be sure, one, two, three, four, five, six. The blue shape is six-sided. And six-sided polygons are called hexagons.

Which of these polygons has six sides? The blue one.
