A runner covers 58914 meters in nine hours. How much does she cover in one hour?
To answer this question, we need to assume that the runner runs at the same speed throughout the nine hours. In order to work out how much she covers in one hour, we need to divide the total by nine. The calculation is 58914 divided by nine. You can do this however you’re most comfortable doing a division. I’m going to use short division.
First, I consider how many times nine goes into five. It doesn’t go at all. So I carry the five into the next column. I could include a zero above the division line. But as is the first digit in a number greater than one, I don’t actually need it.
Next, I consider how many times nine goes into 58. Well, six multiplied by nine is equal to 54. So we have six nines with a remainder of four. Now I consider how many times nine goes into 49. Five multiplied by nine is equal to 45. So we have five nines with a remainder of four.
Next, we consider how many times nine goes into 41. Four multiplied by nine is equal to 36. So we have four nines and a remainder of five. Finally, we consider how many times nine goes into 54. We already know that six multiplied by nine is equal to 54 exactly. So we have six nines with no remainder. Assuming the runner runs at the same pace throughout the nine hours, then the distance covered in one hour is 6546 meters.
