We know that Emma is subtracting or taking away on a number line. Counting backwards on a number line is the same as subtracting. We can see the Emma starts at number 82. And all of the calculations that we have to choose from also start at number 82. We have to work out how much Emma subtracts from 82.

Let’s count the number of tens she counts back. One ten, two tens, three tens, four tens, and one more makes five. Emma has subtracted five tens. We know that five tens makes 50. So the calculation Emma is working on is 82 takeaway 50. Now, we need to work out the answer. What is 82 take away five tens or 50. 82 take away 10 is 72, take away another 10 62, 52, 42, 32. 82 take away 50 is 32.
