Find the elapsed time from 2:43 pm to 8:28 pm.

How can we find out how much time has passed between 2:43 and 8:28? Let’s take it one piece at a time. How much time elapses from 2:43 to three o’clock? We know that there are 60 minutes per hour. It is 43 minutes past 2:00. If we subtract 43 from 60, we get 17. And that’s how many minutes it takes to get to 3:00 pm from 2:43.

Now that it’s 3:00 pm, we can count by hours. From 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm, one hour has passed. From 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm, another hour passes. From 5:00 to 6:00, one hour. From 6:00 to 7:00, one hour. From 7:00 to 8:00, one hour. And now we need to go from 8:00 pm to 8:28 pm. 8:28 pm equals 28 minutes after eight o’clock. The elapsed time between 8:00 and 8:28 is 28 minutes.

Now we need to add up our elapsed time. We can’t add minutes and hours. So we move the minutes over. And then we add the elapsed hours and the elapsed minutes. One plus one plus one plus one plus one equals five. Five hours elapsed.

To add the minutes, we add seven plus eight equals 15. And then we add one plus one plus two, which equals four. And we see that 45 minutes have passed. The elapsed time is five hours and 45 minutes.
