We can count in hundreds. 100, 200, 300, 400, what? Write the missing number in words. And, write the missing number in digits.
Each of the blue blocks in this question represents 100. We can tell this because there’s only one block in the first column, and it’s labeled with the number 100. So, we can use these 100-blocks to help us count in hundreds. Look at how we add one more block each time. To start with, we have one block. Then, it becomes two and then three. We keep on adding one more 100 each time. And so, every column is 100 larger than the last one. The final column isn’t labeled.
Let’s count in hundreds from the start to see if we can work out what the final column should be worth. 100, 200, 300, 400. We go from 400 to having one more 100 in the last column. We have five 100s. The missing number is 500. There are five blocks and each one is worth 100. Altogether that’s 500.
Now that we know our missing number is 500, we can answer the question. First, we’re told to write the missing number in words. And to do this, we write the number five as a word, F-I-V-E. And then, the word hundred. Five hundred.
Secondly, we’re asked to write the missing number in digits. We can see the numbers from 100 to 400 already written in digits. To write the number 500, we simply need to make sure that the digit five is in the hundreds place. And to show that it is in the hundred place, we need to put a zero in the tens place and a zero in the ones place too. So to write the missing number, which we said was 500, in digits, we have to write the digit five, zero, zero. This is the same as 500.
We counted in hundreds to help us find the missing number. 100, 200, 300, 400, 500. We write the missing number in words with the words five followed by hundred. And, we write the missing number in digits with the digits five, zero, zero.
