Where in the body is smooth muscle tissue found? (A) Bones and cartilage. (B) Surrounding the heart. (C) Digestive canal and blood vessels. Or (D) the skin and pancreas.

The question asks us for the location of smooth muscle tissue in the body. You likely remember that there are four main types of tissue in the body: epithelial, muscle, connective, and nervous.

Smooth muscle, along with skeletal and cardiac, are specialized types of muscle tissue. Although all three types of muscles share the basic function of producing movement, they differ in their specific function, their appearance, and where they are found in the body.

Skeletal muscles are attached to bones by tendons, a type of connective tissue. These are the muscles that are responsible for all of our voluntary motions, meaning we can usually decide to contract and relax them. Skeletal muscles let us dance, smile, and even talk.

Cardiac muscle tissues are found only in the heart. If you have ever tried to consciously stop or start your own heart, you already know that cardiac muscles are involuntary, meaning we cannot consciously control them. Their function is to pump blood between the lungs and the rest of the body. To do this, cardiac muscles must contract and relax rhythmically and continuously, without tiring, for our entire lifespan.

Smooth muscles are associated with our internal organs. They are also considered involuntary muscle tissues. Smooth muscles allow our stomach to churn, push food through our digestive tracts, and open and close ducts throughout our bodies. They also serve the critical purpose of changing the diameter of our blood vessels to maintain correct blood pressure.

After reviewing the three types of muscle tissue, we can see that the correct answer is (C). Smooth muscle can be found in the digestive canal and within blood vessels.
