Complete the number sentence below. Three times eight is equal to two times what?

Both sides of the equal sign need to be equal. What do we multiply two by to give us the same as three multiplied by eight? Here, we have an array which shows three groups of eight. We need to make this into two equal groups. Halving the group of counters is the same as dividing by two. We’re making two equal groups or two equal halves.

Let’s count how many counters there are in each group: three, six, nine, 12. Three times eight is equal to two times 12. You may already know that three times eight is 24 and two times 12 is 24. The missing number is 12.

Three times eight is equal to two times 12.
