This picture shows the mass of eight kittens. What is the difference in mass between the heaviest kitten and the lightest kitten? The masses of the kittens are to be put in four groups. Write the missing numbers in the table. One has been done for you.

The first part of the question asks us to find the difference in mass between the heaviest and the lightest kitten. This is the heaviest kitten. It has a four in the hundreds place. All of the other kittens have two hundreds or three hundreds. So the heaviest kitten weighs 410 grams.

Now we need to find the lightest kitten. These two cats have a two in the hundreds place. 255 is less than 275. So the mass of the lightest kitten is 255 grams.

Now we can find the difference between 410 and 255 grams. 255 plus 45 equals 300. 300 plus 100 is 400. And 400 plus 10 equals 410. Altogether, we’ve added 155. 145 plus 10 is 155. So the difference between the heaviest and the lightest kitten is 155 grams.

The second part of the question asks us to put the kittens into one of four groups on the table. First, we need to find the kittens whose mass is between 250 and 299 grams. 255 and 275 are between 250 and 299. So there are two kittens in the first group. Next, we’re looking for kittens whose mass is between 300 and 349 grams. 305, 310, and 345 come between 300 and 349. So there are three kittens in this group. Next, we’re looking for kittens whose mass is between 350 and 399 grams. 360 and 375 come between 350 and 399. So there are two kittens in this group. And the last group has already been done for us.

The difference in mass between the heaviest and the lightest kitten is 155 grams. And the missing numbers in the table from top to bottom are two, three, and two.
