What fraction is shaded?

We can see the circle has been divided into three equal parts or thirds. This means that the bottom number, the denominator, of our fraction is three. One of the three parts has been shaded. So, the top number, the numerator, of our fraction is one. We write the fraction as the number of parts shaded over the total number of parts. The fraction shaded is one-third.
