The temperature on the playground is lower than the temperature in the classroom. How much lower is it?

We know that the temperature on the playground is lower than the temperature in the classroom. It’s five degrees Celsius in the playground and 20 degrees Celsius in the classroom. And we need to work out how much lower the temperature is in the playground than in the classroom. How much lower is five degrees Celsius than 20 degrees Celsius?

To find the difference, we could use the thermometer as a number line. 15 degrees is five degrees less than 20 degrees. We can count in fives. 10 degrees is five degrees lower than 15 degrees. And five less than 10 is five. We counted back in fives three times. Three fives are 15. So the temperature in the playground is 15 degrees lower than the temperature in the classroom. 20 take away five is 15.
