What is the name of the compound
KCl?
K is the chemical symbol of the
element potassium. Potassium is a metal. Cl is the chemical symbol of
chlorine. Chlorine is a nonmetal. Compounds that contain metal
elements and nonmetal elements are called ionic compounds.
We can name a simple ionic compound
in three steps. First, we write the name of the
metal in the chemical formula. The metal in the chemical formula
KCl is potassium. Then we write the name of the
nonmetal in the chemical formula. The nonmetal is chlorine. Finally, we change the ending of
the second element’s name to I-D-E. So, in the name chlorine, we
replace I-N-E with I-D-E. This gives us the name
chloride. Therefore, the name of the compound
KCl is potassium chloride.
