Use the number line to complete the following addition sentence: five plus the missing number equals 17.

Number five has been marked on the number line. This is where we need to start. And we need to reach number 17, which has also been marked on the number line. We have also marked on the number line the number of times we’ve counted forward one place.

Let’s count the number of times we have to count forward to get from five to 17: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, 10, 11, 12. We counted forward 12 places. So five plus 12 equals 17. The missing number is 12.
