Video Transcript

Write seven thousand three hundred twenty-six ten thousandths in expanded form.

First, let’s try to write this as a fraction. We know we have seven thousand three hundred twenty-six, and that is ten thousandths. Before we write this in expanded form, let’s write it as a decimal. And before we can do that, we need to think about what we know about decimal place value.

Because we know that this is a fraction, there’s a zero in the ones place and then a decimal. And then we write 7326. Notice how the last digit, the six, lands in the ten thousandths place. So this number as a decimal is 0.7326. But this decimal form is not expanded form.

To write this value in expanded form, we’ll need to consider the place value of each digit, beginning with the seven. Because the seven is in the tenths place, we have seven tenths, and we write seven tenths as seven times 0.1, seven times one tenth.

From there, we move to the right and consider the digit in the hundredths place. We have three hundredths. And we write that as three times 0.01, three times one hundredth. To the right again, we enter the thousandths place. And we have two thousandths, which we rewrite as two times 0.001.

Before we consider our last digit, we’ll make a little bit of room. And finally, we’ll consider the last digit, the six, in the ten thousandths place, which we can rewrite as six times one ten thousandth, six times 0.0001.

To write this value in expanded form, we needed to consider the place value of every digit. Seven tenths, three hundredths, two thousandths, and six ten thousandths. When you add seven tenths, three hundredths, two thousandths, and six ten thousandths, you get 7326 ten thousandths.
