Video Transcript

Using the Venn diagram, find the intersection of 𝐴 and 𝐶.

This upside-down U is a symbol for intersection. And an intersection is all the common elements between the two sets. So we want the intersection of 𝐴 and 𝐶. Here we have the set 𝐴 with elements eight, one, and four that are in it. And here we have the set 𝐶 with elements of five, three, nine, and six.

So once again, the set 𝐴 had elements eight, one, and four. And the set 𝐶 had elements five, three, nine, and six. So what elements do they have in common? Eight is only in the set 𝐴. One is only in the set 𝐴, and so is four. Five is only in the set 𝐶, so is three, so is nine, and so is six.

This means they don’t have any elements in common. So the set of 𝐴 intersection 𝐶 would be empty. And we call this the empty or the null set.
