Skip count forward by fives to add five. Four plus five equals nine. What is nine plus five? What is 14 plus five? And what is 19 plus five?
In this question, we’re being asked to skip count forward by fives to add five each time. When we skip count, we can start at zero. But we can also start at any other number. In this question, we started skip counting from number four. And we skip counted by five. Skip counting by five is the same as adding five. Starting at four and counting forward five more, five, six, seven, eight, nine. Four plus five equals nine.
The first of our questions asks us what is nine plus five? Adding together nine and five will give us the first of our missing numbers. So, we need to start in nine and count forward five more, one, two, three, four, five. We started at nine and counted five more, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14. Nine plus five is 14. Now, we’re on number 14. And we need to continue skip counting, or adding five.
What is 14 add five? One, two, three, four, five. We’re on number 14, and we need to count forward five more, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19. 14 add five equals 19. And finally, we need to add five to 19, one, two, three, four, five. This is our final missing number. And we’re starting at 19 and counting forward five more, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24.
We use the number line to skip count forward by fives to add five each time. We already knew that four plus five is nine. Nine plus five is 14. 14 plus five is 19. And 19 plus five is 24. Did you notice the pattern in the ones digit? It went from four to nine, four, nine, four. It’s a repeating pattern. We used the number line to skip count forward by fives. And the answers are 14, 19, and 24.
