Complete nine and four-fifths compared to 9.76 using less than, equal to, or greater than.

To compare these two values, we want to make sure they’re in the same format. And that means we’ll take nine and four-fifths and turn it into a decimal number. To turn four-fifths into a decimal, we’ll need to do division: five divided into four.

Five goes into four zero times. So we add a decimal and a zero. Bring your decimal up and then ask, “How many times will five go into 40?” Five goes into 40 eight times. Eight times five equals 40. And 40 minus 40 equals zero. Five divided into four gives us 0.8.

Nine and four-fifths written as a decimal would be 9.8. 9.8 can also be written as 9.80. Now, we’re comparing 9.80 to 9.76. 0.80 is a little bit larger than 0.76.

And that means nine and four-fifths is greater than 9.76.
