To answer this question, we’ll have to remember what the word “elapsed” means. Elapsed time is the amount of time that has passed. How do we go from 7:50 AM to 11:52 AM? Well, what time would it be if one hour passed from 7:50 AM?
If one hour passed, it would be 8:50 AM. And then another hour passes. And it’s 9:50 AM, plus another hour, 10:50 AM. And a fourth hour passes. It’s now 11:50 AM.
How much time passes between 11:50 AM and 11:52 AM? Only two minutes pass between 11:50 AM and 11:52 AM. To determine the total time, we need to add the number of hours that have passed plus the number of minutes that have passed.
When we add all the hours that have passed, there were four hours and only two minutes. Four hours and two minutes passed between 7:50 AM and 11:52 AM.
