Complete the following: four plus three equals, four tens and three tens equals, 40 plus 30 equals.

Let’s use some place value blocks to help us count four plus three. We can start counting at four and then count forward three more: four, five, six, seven. Four plus three is seven.

Next, we need to add four tens and three tens. We know that four and three make seven. So four tens and three tens must make seven tens.

Finally, we need to add together 40 and 30. 40 is 10 times bigger than four. 30 is 10 times bigger than three. So our answer must be 10 times bigger than seven. Seven times 10 is 70.

Four plus three is seven. Four tens and three tens is seven tens. 40 and 30 is 70.
