Calculate the following: 1.2 divided by two.

We’re being asked to divide a decimal number, 1.2, by a whole number, two. To do this, we’re going to use a known fact to help us. We know that 12 divided by two equals six. There are six twos in 12, two, four, six, eight, 10, 12. 1.2 is 10 times smaller than 12. So, we need to divide six by 10 which is 0.6. 1.2 divided by two equals 0.6.

We calculated our answer by ignoring the decimal point. Instead of dividing 1.2 by two, we divided 12 by two. We were able to add the decimal point back by dividing six by 10. 1.2 is 10 times smaller than 12. And 0.6 is 10 times smaller than six. 1.2 divided by two equals 0.6.
