First, we add the ones: four plus seven. That makes 11. We can write the one in the ones column. And we need to carry the 10 across to the tens column.

Now, we need to add the tens: five plus three plus the one we carried over. Five plus three is eight and one more makes nine.

54 plus 37 is 91.
