The Addition Symbol
In this video, we will learn how to
read, write, and model addition expressions with numbers up to 10 and represent
addition using the plus sign. This is the addition symbol in
maths. When we see this symbol, it means
add or plus. The addition symbol tells us that
we need to add together these two groups of counters and find the total number of
counters.
In this addition expression, we’re
being asked to add together two counters and another two counters. We would read the expression as two
plus two. To help us find the total number of
counters, we could use a five frame. Then we can place all of the
counters together and count the total. One, two, three, four. So we can say that two plus two is
four. Let’s practise using the addition
symbol to read, write, and model addition sentences.
How many ducks are there?
We’re shown two groups of
ducks. And in the middle of the two
pictures of ducks, there’s an addition symbol. This symbol means add or
plus. We have to add the two groups
of ducks together and find the total number of ducks. Let’s use some counters to help
us. In the first picture, there are
one, two, three ducks. In the second picture, there
are one, two ducks. What is three plus two? If we put all of the counters
together, we can count the total. Let’s count how many counters
we have altogether. One, two, three, four,
five. Three plus two is five.
Count to find the total. Three add four.
In this question, we’re being
asked to add three green bricks and four blue bricks. In other words, we’re being
asked to find the total number of bricks. If we add both groups of bricks
together, we can count the total. One, two, three, four, five,
six, seven. Three add four is seven.
What is three plus two? Is it four, five, or one?
If we place three counters into
a five frame and then we add two more, how many counters do we have
altogether? We don’t even need to
count. The five frame is full. That means the total is
five. Three plus two is five. This five frame only has four
counters. We know that three plus two is
five. This picture shows five
counters. This is the correct answer. Three add two is five.
What have we learned in this
video? We’ve learned how to recognise the
addition symbol. And we’ve also learned how to read,
write, and model addition sentences. We’ve learned that the addition
symbol means plus, add, or and.
