Use less than, equal to, or greater than to fill in the blank. 132 square meters blank 5,961 square decimeters.

In order to compare our two values, we need to ensure that the units are the same. We know that one meter is equal to 10 decimeters. If we consider a square with side length one meter, we can calculate its area but squaring one. This is equal to one square meter. An identical square with dimensions given in decimeters will measure 10 decimeters by 10 decimeters. This will have an area of 100 square decimeters.

One square meter is equal to 100 square decimeters. We could work this out without drawing the diagram by squaring both of our numbers. We can then convert 132 square meters into square decimeters by multiplying by 100. 132 multiplied by 100 is 13,200. As 13,200 is greater than 5,961, we can conclude that 132 square meters is greater than 5,961 square decimeters. The correct answer is greater than.
