In this video, we will show you how to assign an exam to your students.

To assign an exam, you must be a portal educator and be signed in to educators.nagwa.com.

First, click on “Assignments” in the toolbar. From here, you’ll have access to three subcategories: assessments, exams, and sessions.

In this video, we’ll be focusing on the resources designed to help students prepare for formal examinations. Let’s click the “Exam” button.

On the next page, you’ll be able to see the complete library of exam materials made available on the portal by your admin.

Nagwa’s exam resources include original exam-style papers. You can assign these papers digitally using our portal and benefit from automatic marking once the deadline is reached. Exam papers are also available in PDF format if you would like to print them out to simulate test conditions.

In order to preview any of the available materials, simply click on the name of the exam paper. This will take you to the resource page, from which you have a number of options.

Clicking the thumbnail of the first button “View Answers” takes you to a page showing all of the individual questions in the exam paper, with the correct answers highlighted in green.

You will note that there is a button in the top-right corner that says “Assign Paper”, but we’ll get to this in a moment.

The third option we have is to assign the paper, which is also available from the “View Answers” page. Clicking this button allows you to digitally assign the exam to your students using the portal.

The advantage of digitally assigning a paper is that you can benefit from automatic marking and online reports of your students’ progress. Let’s click “Assign Paper” and run through details.

In this case, we are assigning (Model 6). You will notice that some of the information has been autofilled with the correct information.

Much like with an assessment, you need to fill in the start and due dates along with the classes that you would like to send the exam to.

We’ll leave the start date and time as the default so that the paper is available as soon as we set the exam, and we’ll set the due date for a week in the future, so we’ll adjust this accordingly. It is worth noting that an exam is a timed resource. The start and end dates show the time period in which your student can begin taking the test.

The subject box has been automatically filled, since we are assigning a (physics) exam.

The next option allows us to select the class and the students we want to assign this resource to. Clicking the class drop-down menu shows all of your classes that are associated with the selected subject. Note that only one class can be selected here.

To the right of this, we have the “Students” box. By default, the portal will assign the exam to all students in the class as shown here. If you want to select a smaller subgroup, you can click the cross to remove this option.

You can now select individual students in the class using the drop-down menu. Note that typing in either of these boxes will filter the drop-down menu, allowing you to find classes or students more easily.

To the right of the “Students” box you will notice two options. The plus icon allows you to assign this exam to multiple classes. Clicking this will add a new row to the selection. Each row can be filled in with the details of one class.

If you add a row by accident, you can delete it using the bin icon.

The next few options, Bundle, Pack, and Paper, have been autofilled, since we assigned this exam directly from the resource page. This is a useful feature, but you can also fill these in manually if needed. You can edit the selection by removing any of the selected options.

This allows you to pick any of the exam resources under the currently selected subject.

The last option on the form is the “Duration”. This is the amount of time a student will have to complete the resource once they start. By default, this box will autofill with the correct amount of time for proper exam conditions, but of course you can change this as desired.

Once you’re happy with the selection, you can either save the exam as a draft, if you want to complete it later, or click “Send”. We want to assign the exam now, so we’ll click “Send”.

You’ll now see a banner saying “You have assigned the assessment successfully.” Note that the status of the assessment is now “In Progress”.

Note that if your students are using the Nagwa Study app, they will receive a notification that they have a new assessment as soon as a new assessment is live.

The page that we are currently viewing shows a summary of all of the exam assignments. This page can be reached from the “Assignments” main page by clicking “ Exams” and then “View Exam Assignments”.

From this page, you can see a complete list of all of the exam assignments, including the newly assigned one. The table below contains all of the details of each of your exam assignments. If we scroll right on this table, we can also see a number of links and actions available.

In the far-right column, we have a number of actions. If an exam assignment has not yet reached its start date, the status will display as “Not Started”. Similarly, any exams you saved as a draft will have the status “Draft”.

For these assignments, you will be able to edit or delete them. Clicking the “Edit” button takes you to a similar page to the one we saw when creating a new exam assignment. From here, you can amend the details.

Back on the overview page, we can also delete an exam if it has the status “Not Started”. Doing so means it will not be sent to your students and instead it will be removed from the table.

Once the start date for an exam assessment passes, its status will change to “In Progress”. Once this happens, you will no longer be able to edit or delete the assessment, but instead you will gain access to the “View Reports” action.

Between the start and end dates of your exam assignment, you can see an overall summary of your students’ progress. You can even look more closely at the progress of individual students as they complete the exam assignment by clicking “View Report” again next to the student’s name.

Note that this will be empty until one of the students submits some questions from their assessment.

This page will also allow you to download the results in a couple of different spreadsheet formats, or to view the results in chart form.

If we head over briefly to look at a student account, they will find their new exam assessment by clicking on “Assignments” in their toolbar and then “Exams”. From here, a student will be able to see their current exams and their past exams. The most recent exam will be found at the top of this list.

Each item on this page will show the details of an exam, including how long a student will have to answer the questions. To start answering the questions, a student will need to click “Start” and confirm they wish to begin the timer.

For more detailed information on how to solve an exam assessment as a student, check out our dedicated video guide.

As an educator, you should advise your students that exiting the exam page does not pause the timer! Once a student starts an exam assessment, they will only be able to edit their answers during the allotted time. After this, their assessment will remain locked.

Once the deadline for an exam assessment is reached, the status of the assessment will update to “Closed” and the assessment report will become available.

As a final point, it’s worth noting that you can create an exam assignment without going directly to the exam resource page. Instead, we can simply click the “+ New Exam Assignment” button from either of the overview pages and fill in the form. This may be preferable once you are familiar with the available papers.
