Mentally calculate 32 plus 53.
One way to think about this is to add the digits in the tens place. We say the tens plus the tens and then to add the ones plus the ones. Here, we have three tens plus five tens equals eight tens. And then, we add the ones together. Two ones plus three ones equals five ones. There’s an eight in the tens place and a five in the ones place which equals 85.
32 plus 53 equals 85.
